Problem, cause, fix

Electrician case studies: real problems, clear fixes

Every job follows the same pattern: find the cause safely, fix it properly, test it and explain it. These examples show what that looks like in homes and businesses across Greater Manchester.

What do TRACEFORM case studies show?

These electrician case studies show how our engineers handle typical jobs: the problem reported, the cause found through testing, the repair or installation carried out and the certificate left behind. Published jobs are shared with the customer's permission and never include personal details.

Each case study sets out the problem the customer reported, what our engineer found, how it was fixed and the outcome.

What each case study tells you

Good electrical job examples are more useful than a list of services. Each one here follows the same structure: what the customer noticed, what testing showed, what was done about it and what they were left with. That is the same order our engineers work in on site, and it is the order we explain things to you on the day.

You will notice that none of the fixes start with replacing parts. Faults are traced with isolation and testing first, so the repair addresses the cause rather than the symptom. Where we recommend further work, the case study says so, because a clear note of what can wait is part of a good job.

Before and after electrical work: what changes for you

The visible change after a repair or upgrade is often small: a new socket, a tidy consumer unit, lights that no longer flicker. The important change is in the paperwork and the protection. Circuits are tested and recorded, protective devices are checked, and the certificate tells the next electrician, buyer or letting agent exactly what was done.

Emergency electrician jobs follow the same discipline at speed. The priority is to make the installation safe and restore what can be restored safely, then to explain whether any follow-up visit is needed and what it will cost.

Jobs from our engineers

Examples of typical jobs. Real jobs from our engineers, shared with the customer's permission, are published here as they are completed.

  • TRACEFORM electrician arriving at a semi at sunset for an emergency call-out, van at the kerb

    Heaton Moor, StockportSame evening

Half the house lost power on a Sunday evening

    Problem
The RCD protecting the kitchen and downstairs sockets kept tripping and would not stay on, leaving the family without a fridge, freezer or heating controls on a Sunday evening.
    Cause
Rainwater had got into a cracked outdoor socket on the garden wall, which shared a circuit with the downstairs sockets. Insulation resistance testing found the leakage on that one outlet.
    Fix
The engineer isolated the outdoor spur, replaced the damaged socket with a weatherproof outdoor unit, sealed the cable entry and retested the whole circuit before restoring power.

Power back on the same evening, a written explanation of the cause and a Minor Works Certificate for the replacement socket.

  • Electrician testing a new socket in a freshly decorated room after a full rewire

    Urmston, TraffordPlanned in stages

Full rewire of an Edwardian terrace before redecoration

    Problem
New owners found original rubber-insulated cable in parts of the house, too few sockets and lighting circuits without an earth, and wanted it sorted before plastering and decorating.
    Cause
A condition report showed deteriorated insulation on older circuits and missing protective conductors on lighting, coded as potentially dangerous.
    Fix
A planned full rewire room by room: new circuits on RCBO protection, more sockets where the family needed them, new lighting with earthed fittings and a new consumer unit, coordinated with the plasterer.

A safe, documented installation with an Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations compliance certificate for the notifiable work.

  • Electrician repairing pendant lights in a brick-walled cafe before opening

    Northern Quarter, ManchesterBefore opening

Café lighting repaired before the doors opened

    Problem
Half of the pendant lights over a café counter flickered and then failed during evening service, leaving the counter area too dark to work safely.
    Cause
A failed LED driver serving the counter pendants had started to overheat; the remaining drivers were close to the end of their life.
    Fix
The engineer attended early the next morning, replaced the failed driver, checked the others under load and recommended replacing two more at the next quiet period.

Lights working before opening time, no lost trading and a clear note of the follow-up work and its cost.

On every job

How each job is handled

  1. Listen and make safe

We ask what happened, what you can safely see and whether anyone is at risk, then tell you what to switch off while you wait.

  2. Find the cause with testing

The engineer isolates and tests circuits to locate the fault instead of guessing or replacing parts until something works.

  3. Agree the fix and the price

You hear what we found, the options and the price before any repair goes ahead.

  4. Fix, retest and certify

The repair is completed, the circuit is retested and you receive the certificate or report that the work requires.

  5. Explain what to watch for

We tell you what caused the problem, anything we recommend doing later and how to reach us if it returns.

Questions

Questions about our work

Are these electrician case studies real customer jobs?

The examples on this page illustrate the kinds of jobs our engineers carry out every week. Real customer jobs, with photographs and the customer's permission, are added here as they are completed, and they replace these examples.

Will you publish details about my job?

Only with your permission, and never your name, full address or anything that could identify you. We describe the area, the problem, the cause, the fix and the outcome.

Do I get paperwork after a repair?

Yes, when the work alters the installation. Repairs and additions are usually recorded on a Minor Works Certificate, while new circuits and consumer units get a full Electrical Installation Certificate.

Can you work around opening hours for a business?

Yes. Shops, cafés and offices often book early mornings, evenings or closed days so lighting, power and kitchen equipment are back before trading starts. Tell us your hours when you call.
