The consumer unit distributes electricity and houses protective devices, so heat, crackling, visible damage, repeated tripping or a new persistent buzz deserves proper assessment. TRACEFORM provides 24/7 help for urgent consumer-unit faults and can assess whether a safe repair, isolation or replacement is appropriate. Replacement is not assumed merely because a unit is older; the condition, fault and wider installation need to be understood.
Symptoms to report
Describe whether the noise is continuous or occurs only with a particular load, whether any switch has operated, and whether there is warmth, discolouration, an acrid smell or loss of circuits. Keep clear if there are signs of burning or arcing. Never remove the cover, tighten terminals or spray anything into the enclosure.
How the unit is assessed
The electrician checks the reported symptoms, visible condition and operation of the installation, then isolates and tests as required. A sound can originate from a protective device, connection or equipment elsewhere, so diagnosis should establish the source rather than relying on the word 'buzzing'. The condition of affected circuits may also need testing before they are returned to service.
Repair, replacement or isolation
Some faults can be addressed with a targeted repair or replacement component where suitable and safe. Significant damage, incompatibility, condition or the scope of required work may make consumer-unit replacement the appropriate recommendation. If immediate completion is not possible, the unsafe part may need to remain isolated. The electrician will explain what can and cannot be used.
Managed and commercial properties
For landlords and businesses, provide access information, the person authorised to approve work and details of circuits serving tenants, customers or critical operations. Isolation may affect shared areas or several occupiers. Relevant test results or certification depend on the work actually undertaken; an emergency repair does not itself constitute a full EICR.
After the visit
You should receive a clear account of the observed fault, any isolation or repair, safe-use restrictions and recommended follow-on work. If broader installation condition needs assessment, an EICR can be discussed as a separate planned inspection rather than used as a substitute for urgent diagnosis.
