EV Charger Installation Cost: UK Prices and Manchester Quotes

A fair price needs a defined charger, cable route and electrical scope behind it. A standard package label does not establish what your property actually requires.

Use the installed-price worksheet to separate gross price, confirmed grant support and unresolved scope.

Short answer

What does EV charger installation cost?

EV charger installation cost is £800–£1,200 for a standard UK home installation in Heatable's June 2026 guide; complex work is £1,200–£1,500+. These are external estimates, not TRACEFORM prices. Confirm VAT and exclusions. Charger choice, cable routes, groundworks and electrical condition require a property-specific assessment and written quotation.

Compare EV charger installation cost as a complete usable installation, not just a unit price or an assumed grant deduction. The independent UK ranges here were checked on 1 October 2026 and are not TRACEFORM offers. For an electric car charger installation cost comparison, a Manchester survey should establish placement, supply conditions, route, extra works and a written payable total.

Worth knowing first

Key facts

  1. Heatable's June 2026 standard installed range is £800–£1,200. It is UK supplier guidance; confirm VAT and exclusions.

Heatable: Standard and complex charger estimates
  2. Checkatrade lists a typical UK installed total around £1,000, distinct from its £450–£800 supply-only unit range.

Checkatrade: Charger equipment and installation estimates
  3. Checkatrade gives two to four hours for straightforward fitting. Approvals and additional work are outside that narrow estimate.

Standard versus complex EV charger installations

Heatable's standard and complex UK ranges describe supplier-guide categories rather than identical installations across Greater Manchester. A shorter accessible route and a project crossing finished surfaces or reaching a detached garage may need very different work. Do not assume a property qualifies for a headline package until its equipment, route and electrical conditions have been assessed.

What is included in standard installation?

Ask for the unit model, mounting position, agreed cable route, relevant electrical protection, testing, commissioning and completion documents. Standard is a supplier-defined scope, not a universal cable allowance. Confirm whether containment, wall penetrations, account setup and user instruction are covered. A retail unit price excludes the work needed to connect and verify a usable installation.

What is usually quoted separately?

Potential extras include groundworks, difficult routes, reinstatement, existing-installation remedials, parking permissions and supply-network changes. Inclusion depends on the actual quote. Ask who prices and performs each item, and whether third-party costs are inside the payable total. There is no verified universal extra-charge list or included cable length here.

What increases the fitted price?

Cable routes, detached garages and groundworks

Explain where the car normally parks and how the route reaches the charger. Finished paving, planting, shared land, garage access and the desired appearance of containment all affect the survey. Check who restores disturbed surfaces. The published soft-ground trench and hire examples are not hardstanding prices or a reliable way to calculate a driveway project by multiplying its length.

Supply capacity and electrical protection

The installer must assess the supply, intended demand, earthing and protection rather than assume every home needs a new consumer unit. Necessary remedials and optional future-proofing should be distinguished. Ask whether network-operator involvement is required and who manages it. This guide gives no DIY cable sizing, universal DNO threshold or promised network lead time.

For the electrical design, confirm the applicable standard at the time of work. IET published BS 7671 Amendment 4 on 15 April 2026, incorporating earlier changes, with the predecessor version withdrawn six months later. That transition is a technical review matter, not a reason to add an automatic board upgrade to every charger quotation.

Tethered or untethered: which costs less?

There is no sourced universal price premium when comparing untethered vs tethered EV charger options. Compare the usable setup: whether a compatible cable is included, reach to the vehicle, daily handling, warranty and replacement arrangements. An untethered unit may need a separate cable. Compare named products with the same installation scope instead of treating connection style as a price rule.

Do you need 7kW or 22kW charging?

Common 7kW categories and 7.4kW product ratings describe equipment capability, not a guaranteed speed for every vehicle. A 22kW category normally needs suitable three-phase supply and a compatible vehicle. Ask what the house and car can actually support before buying higher-rated equipment or accepting a supply-change proposal. Product capability, electrical design and vehicle limits are separate inputs.

How long does installation take?

Checkatrade's two-to-four-hour figure concerns straightforward installation, not the full project from first enquiry. Survey, permissions, network work, groundworks and remedials can extend the programme. Agree a survey-dependent plan covering fitting, commissioning and handover separately from external approvals. An online time estimate does not guarantee TRACEFORM's booking or completion date.

Can a grant reduce your installation bill?

GOV.UK's resident route offers 75% of eligible cost up to £500, subject to its conditions and process. Use the dedicated grant guide for eligibility and application timing. Show the gross quote and grant separately; do not subtract an assumed award or infer TRACEFORM's OZEV authorisation from NICEIC registration. Ask who delivers the grant-compliant installation before relying on support.

Compare Manchester EV charger quotes

Give contractors the same parking position, charger model and route information. Record the cable allowance, groundworks, remedials, network responsibilities, warranty and documents beside each quote. Check subscription renewals, app ownership and support responsibilities. A comparable worksheet makes omissions visible, but cannot establish electrical suitability or convert a guide range into an instant property price.

Side by side

Are two charger quotations comparable?

Standard scope, complex work, supply-only equipment and grant support have different bases. Match the installation before comparing the payable price.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home EV charger cost with installation?

Heatable's June 2026 guide lists standard UK installation at £800–£1,200 and complex work at £1,200–£1,500 or more. VAT and exclusions need confirmation. These figures are not TRACEFORM prices or a Manchester quote. Compare the named charger, route, electrical assessment and completion scope before using a market range to judge a total.

What does a standard EV charger installation include?

The quote should define the unit, mounting, cable route, relevant electrical work, testing and commissioning. Suppliers use different standard-package limits, so request the actual cable allowance and exclusions. Check account setup, instructions and documents too. A headline installed price is only comparable when both contractors describe the same usable installation and tax basis.

Do I need a new consumer unit to install a charger?

Not every property needs a replacement board. The installer must assess existing capacity, protection, earthing and the proposed demand. Ask which remedials are necessary, which upgrades are optional and what each costs. A generic package description or photograph cannot establish suitability or justify an automatic consumer-unit addition to every charger quote.

Is a tethered charger cheaper than an untethered charger?

There is no verified universal price difference across models and installation scopes. Compare the complete usable setup, including any separate compatible cable needed for an untethered unit. Cable reach, warranty, support and route matter as well as equipment price. Request matching model-level quotations rather than treating tethered or untethered as a fixed cost rule.

Can I install a 22kW charger at a normal UK house?

A 22kW unit rating is not a promise of that output at your home or into your car. This category normally needs suitable three-phase supply and a compatible vehicle. Have those conditions assessed before choosing higher-rated equipment. Network changes, charger capability and the vehicle's charging limit are separate parts of the decision.

How long does installation take, and can I do it myself?

Checkatrade gives two to four hours for straightforward fitting, excluding wider approvals and extra works. Agree a survey-dependent programme for your project. Use a suitably qualified installer for design, connection and verification; this is not a DIY procedure. Groundworks, permissions, network involvement and remedials may extend the project beyond the physical fitting visit.
