Cost of Adding Sockets and Lights: UK Price Guide

Prices move with the point, the circuit, the cable route and the finish you want. Replacing an accessory is not the same task as adding new wiring.

Plan the room before buying fittings or assuming an existing circuit can take new loads.

Short answer

What is the cost of adding sockets and lights?

The cost of adding sockets and lights depends on whether points are replaced, added or supplied by a new circuit. Checkatrade lists a new socket at £100–£200 plus VAT and a downlight project at £300–£500, with its VAT basis unclear. These are external estimates, not TRACEFORM prices; routes, fittings and making good change the quote.

The cost of adding sockets and lights is easiest to compare with a room point schedule. List each location, intended use, fitting and finish, then ask what assessment and testing are included. The dated third-party figures below are budgeting context, not TRACEFORM rates or a universal price per point. A written quote should identify the complete scope and payable total.

Worth knowing first

Key facts

  1. Checkatrade's May 2026 socket table gives £100–£200 including labour, plus applicable VAT. Circuit work and access can change the scope.

    Checkatrade: New-socket task estimates
  2. The July 2026 downlight guide gives £300–£500 per project, distinct from its £20–£75 fitting figure. VAT is not explicit.

    Checkatrade: Downlight and light-replacement estimates
  3. Manchester's £155–£311 socket directory range covers mixed jobs, without a fixed point count or clear VAT basis.

    Checkatrade: Manchester socket price context
  4. Not every addition to an existing circuit is notifiable in England. New circuits and relevant special-location work need the appropriate route.

Electrical Safety First: Part P and England notification scope
  5. More outlets do not by themselves increase circuit capacity. Assess intended loads rather than treating socket count as a safety test.

Your price depends on a survey of your property. Use these ranges to sense-check written quotes, not as an offer.

Adding a socket versus replacing an existing one

Replacing a suitable accessory at an existing position is different from creating a new point. An addition may require a new route, wall openings and assessment of the circuit arrangement. A request for a new circuit is a third scope, not an expensive version of a simple accessory swap. Give contractors the same task description before comparing the price.

The Manchester directory range does not specify how many points or what kind of work each job includes. Use it only as local context. There is no verified TRACEFORM per-point tariff or automatic multi-point discount in this guide. A coordinated room project may use access differently, but any saving needs to appear in the actual quotation rather than an invented percentage.

Light replacement versus new lighting and downlights

To compare the cost to replace a light fitting, electrician quotations should identify the fitting, its mounting requirements and who supplies it. For new lighting, explain activities, switching positions, dimming and any separate zones. Product details matter: lamps, drivers, controls and assembly are not automatically covered by a labour-only figure. Check compatibility before buying smart switches or assuming an existing dimmer will suit new equipment.

Why downlight project prices are not universal per-point rates

When comparing downlights installation cost, Checkatrade's project estimate and fitting-cost figure describe different price bases. Multiplying the fitting figure by a light count does not establish cabling, ceiling work, drivers, controls, testing or labour. Compare the complete room design and agreed access. Ask whether insulation, ceiling construction and other site conditions affect the proposed fitting choice, without trying to make those assessments yourself.

What changes the price of each electrical point?

Solid walls, tiles, finished floors and restricted ceiling access can change the work needed to reach a new position. Agree whether containment remains visible or cables are concealed and how the wall or ceiling will be left. Chasing, patch plastering, final finishing and decorating are separate descriptions, even when a contractor offers several of them.

Mark furniture and equipment positions so outlets are useful after the room is finished. For external points, explain exposure, access and the intended appliance or lighting use. Separate essential points from optional changes. None of these factors has a sourced universal surcharge here: use them to define the scope, then let the contractor price the assessed route and finish.

Do you need a new circuit or Building Regulations notification?

An electrician needs to assess the intended load and existing installation before deciding whether an alteration is suitable or a new circuit is needed. Part P still applies to domestic electrical work. Electrical Safety First explains that England's notification scope changed in April 2013; a kitchen or outdoor location alone does not make every addition notifiable. New circuits and relevant special-location work require the appropriate route.

Extra sockets do not increase circuit capacity

More sockets can improve convenient access, but do not create additional electrical capacity by themselves. Share the actual appliance requirements, particularly for cookers, showers and other larger loads. Do not treat an extension lead, plug-in tester or unused outlet as evidence that a circuit can accept the proposal. This guide gives no cable-sizing or spur-wiring instructions.

Make a room point schedule before requesting quotes

Use one line per point: room, position, socket or light type, intended equipment, control requirements, product supplier, route and finish. Mark whether you want a replacement, addition or discussion about a new circuit. Those are planning requests, not design approvals. Annotated external photographs help explain positions; do not remove accessories or covers to collect information.

Give every contractor the same schedule and product information. Ask them to identify necessary associated work, optional points and exclusions separately. Allocate making good to a named trade and agree how changes will be approved. Retain the schedule with the accepted quote so moving a point or changing a fitting is recorded as a variation rather than an unspoken assumption.

What should the electrician test and hand over?

Completion should match the accepted positions, fitting specification and switching arrangement, with appropriate inspection, testing and records for the actual work. Confirm which installation or minor-works records and notification documents apply. Check the agreed finish and any outstanding work by another trade. A reassuring plug-in tester display is not a substitute for professional verification of the alteration.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

How much does adding a new double socket cost?

Checkatrade's UK guide gives £100–£200 including labour, with applicable VAT additional in its table. This is not a fixed TRACEFORM or Manchester price. Circuit suitability, route, accessory choice and the finish affect the work. Ask for an assessed quotation showing any associated circuit work and making-good responsibilities.

How long does it take to install a new plug socket?

Checkatrade gives one to two hours for a simple new socket. Treat that as basic-job context, not a timetable for your property. Restricted access, concealed routes, wall finish and testing can change the duration. A room project or new circuit is a wider scope and needs its own survey-dependent programme.

How much does it cost to install downlights?

Checkatrade's July 2026 table gives £300–£500 for a supply-and-install project, with VAT not explicit. The separate fitting-cost figure is not a complete installed rate. Specify light count, models, ceiling access, controls and circuit work, then check testing and decorative repairs before comparing a whole-room quotation.

Do I need an electrician to install downlights?

Arrange a qualified electrician for assessment and installation of new mains-connected lighting. England does not make every addition to an existing circuit automatically notifiable, but new circuits and relevant special-location work have different requirements. The work still needs suitable design, safe installation, testing and records; a planning schedule is not installation guidance.

Can I plug an electric cooker into a normal socket?

Give the electrician the appliance manufacturer's supply requirements and have the proposed connection assessed. Some cookers require a dedicated circuit; a nearby socket does not establish suitability. Adding outlets does not increase the available capacity. Agree the actual appliance and any necessary circuit work before treating a socket alteration quote as a complete cooker connection.

Are plug-in socket testers any good?

They can indicate some faults but cannot establish every safety characteristic or replace inspection and testing. A normal-looking indication does not approve a circuit for additional sockets or a larger appliance. Ask the electrician to assess the intended alteration and provide appropriate records rather than relying on a consumer tester as proof of suitability.

Does chasing a socket into the wall change the price?

Concealing a box and route can involve different labour and repairs from replacing a surface-mounted point. Wall construction, access and the final finish all matter. Ask whether the quote includes chasing, patch plastering, fuller finishing and decoration. Compare the same route and finish rather than assuming all socket additions leave an equivalent result.
