Rochdale's housing, from mill terraces to moorland
The birthplace of the co-operative movement is still largely a town of pre-1919 terraces: brick around Deeplish, Spotland and Wardleworth, gritstone towards Norden, Wardle and Littleborough. Solid walls, cellars, rear extensions and generations of partial rewiring mean it is normal to find a modern consumer unit feeding circuits with old junction boxes, missing earths on lighting and overloaded kitchen rings. Along the Pennine edge at Littleborough, Smithy Bridge and Hollingworth Lake, weather does the damage: wind-driven rain into outside lights, garden circuits and cables through stone walls, producing RCD trips that only appear in bad weather.
Getting to you across the borough
The M62 runs through the borough with junctions at Milnrow, Rochdale and Heywood, and the M60 and M66 border Middleton. We plan attendance around the A58 Halifax Road and Bury Road, the A664 Manchester Road, the A6046 through Heywood and the A640 out to Milnrow and Newhey. Central Rochdale, Castleton and Milnrow are usually quickest from the M62; Wardle, Littleborough and the Calderbrook side can take longer, and we say so.
Rented terraces and managed homes
Rochdale has a substantial private rented sector, particularly in Deeplish, Wardleworth, Central Rochdale and parts of Heywood. When a tenant reports a fault out of hours we focus on their safety, arrange access with the key-holder and give the landlord or agent a written account of what was found. That record supports the five-yearly inspection regime and the 28-day remedial rule under the 2020 regulations.
