Why Does an RCD Keep Tripping?

An RCD keeps tripping when it detects current leaking from its intended path. A faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, outdoor equipment or several small leakages may be responsible. The trip is a safety response, not proof that the RCD is faulty. If it trips again, will not stay on, or there is heat, smell, damage or water, stop resetting it and arrange professional testing.

Why does an RCD keep tripping?

Why an RCD keeps tripping: it trips when it detects current flowing along an unintended path. Possible reasons include faulty equipment, damaged wiring, moisture or leakage from several connected devices. Do not bypass or repeatedly reset the RCD. Leave the affected circuit off and arrange qualified testing if the cause is unclear or the trip returns.

What repeated RCD trips are telling you

An RCD compares the current flowing out through live conductors with the current returning through neutral. If enough current takes another path, it disconnects the supply quickly to reduce electric-shock and fire risk. A trip therefore means the protective device has detected an imbalance; it does not identify the faulty item by itself.

A single event can follow a temporary fault, but an RCD that trips again, will not stay on or operates whenever particular equipment is used needs investigation. Repeated resetting can repeatedly energise a damaged appliance, wet accessory or faulty cable. Leave the affected circuit or equipment out of use and arrange testing rather than treating the RCD as a nuisance.

An RCD operating may be doing exactly what it was designed to do: disconnecting a potentially unsafe leakage fault.

Why the cause can be difficult to identify

The cause may be one appliance, fixed wiring, an outdoor circuit, moisture or the combined leakage from several devices. Some consumer units have one RCD serving several circuits, while newer installations may use individual RCBOs. This is why the rooms that lose power, the trip switch that moves and the equipment operating at the time are useful clues, but not a diagnosis.

Professional fault finding may include visual inspection, testing the RCD, checking insulation resistance and separating circuits or connected equipment under controlled conditions. These tests require suitable instruments and safe isolation. Never open the consumer unit, touch exposed conductors or attempt electrical tests yourself.

A device staying on after one reset does not prove the fault has cleared. Intermittent moisture or equipment faults can return.

When to stop and call an electrician

Stop resetting the device if it trips repeatedly, immediately trips again, affects essential equipment or follows rain, a leak or recent electrical work. Keep away from water and damaged accessories. If it is safe, switch off a suspect appliance at its socket or switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit; do not approach heat, smoke, sparking or exposed parts.

Can wet weather explain why an RCD keeps tripping?

Yes. Rain or condensation can allow moisture into outdoor lights, sockets, junctions, pumps or damaged cables and cause leakage to earth. Should I replace an RCD that keeps tripping?
