Our electrics kept tripping and we had no idea why. He found the faulty socket and sorted it on the same visit. Really pleased, thanks again 👍

EV Charger Grant 2026: Eligibility and How to Apply
Whether you can claim depends on your home, your parking rights and the vehicle evidence you hold. Find the official route before you agree an installation date.
Rules checked 1 October 2026. This guide cannot confirm entitlement, funding availability or an installer's OZEV authorisation.

What does the EV charger grant 2026 cover?
The EV charger grant 2026 covers 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, capped at £500, for qualifying renters and flat owners with private off-street parking and an eligible vehicle. Separate on-street support has different conditions. Apply and wait for OZEV eligibility notification before installation; the full award is not automatic.
Key facts
Qualifying renters and flat owners can receive 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, capped at £500. Acceptance and the eligible cost determine the award.

The detail
An EV charger grant 2026 application needs the right applicant, property and parking arrangement, not just an electric car. Separate resident, landlord and on-street routes have different conditions. Prepare permissions and evidence, check current GOV.UK rules, and wait for the required OZEV eligibility notification before installation.
What is the EV charger grant in 2026?
The resident EV chargepoint grant contributes towards eligible buying and installation costs. GOV.UK's current award is 75% of those costs, up to £500. The cap is a maximum, not a discount every customer receives. A lower eligible cost produces a smaller contribution, and spending more cannot override the scheme's conditions. Keep the award separate from the total quotation so you can see both the installation commitment and the proposed funding.
What changed from April?
The government raised the relevant residential cap from £350 to £500 from 1 April 2026 and changed the application arrangements. Its July 2026 update explains the new platform and eligibility-notification gate. Older installer articles may still describe the previous amount or process. The scheme overview schedules continuing support until 31 March 2027; that funding period does not establish individual eligibility or guarantee an award. Recheck the live guidance before committing.
Who qualifies: renters, flat owners or homeowners?
For the resident route, check tenure, the kind of home you live in, parking and the eligible vehicle together. Renting residential property or owning and living in a flat can put you within the scheme's intended applicant groups. It does not remove the other tests. A charger advert headed OZEV grant 2026 cannot decide whether a particular tenancy, converted property or allocated bay meets the current rules.
Renting a house or owning a flat
A renter needs suitable private off-street parking and an eligible vehicle, together with the necessary permissions. Lodgers living with their landlord are excluded from this resident route. An ordinary owner-occupied house does not qualify simply because its owner has an electric car and a driveway. GOV.UK describes a converted-flat exception, so check the actual property category rather than treating every building that looks like a house in the same way.
Explain any previous award in the official application rather than assuming another socket will qualify. If the title, tenancy or parking allocation is unclear, resolve it with the relevant landlord, freeholder or managing agent. The route table gives an accessible starting point, but the government decision and current scheme conditions control entitlement.
Landlords use a different application
Residential landlords should use the landlord route, not apply as a resident on behalf of a tenant. The April change notice describes up to 200 sockets across sites, with a maximum £500 per socket, compared with one socket under the resident route. These are different applicant and application arrangements. Use the current scheme overview to identify the landlord evidence and responsibilities before commissioning work; do not combine caps from different schemes.
Can you get a grant without a driveway?
A driveway is not the only possible private parking arrangement. A qualifying allocated off-street bay may be relevant to the resident route if the applicant has the required rights and meets the other conditions. Parking near your home is not the same as controlling a suitable space. Describe whether the bay is allocated, who owns or manages it, and how equipment and cables would reach it.
Households relying on on-street parking need to investigate the separate cross-pavement route. GOV.UK lists support of up to £500 with a cross-pavement solution, subject to its current conditions. This is not permission to leave a loose cable across a pavement, reserve public parking or bypass highway consent. Start from the official scheme overview and establish the local permission route before buying equipment or arranging works.
Permissions in flats and shared spaces
Shared parking, communal walls and cable routes may involve parties other than the person applying. Obtain the relevant landlord, freeholder or managing-agent consent and clarify who controls the parking space. Permission to park does not necessarily authorise alterations to shared areas. Record the unresolved questions for a site survey rather than using the grant award as evidence that the route or electrical supply is acceptable.
How do you apply before installation?
Use the current GOV.UK application journey for the route you have identified. The resident process includes an eligibility-notification stage before installation, so do not rely on a previous year's installer-led arrangements. Prepare the application, establish the scheme-compliant installer and equipment requirements, and keep the official communications. A survey, quotation or provisional booking is not the notification that allows installation to proceed.
Documents and vehicle evidence
Gather the evidence the official route asks for, which may include tenancy or ownership information, parking rights, permissions and eligible vehicle or order evidence. In the relevant lease and work-use categories, GOV.UK requires at least six months' evidence. Explain unusual ownership or employment arrangements through the official process. Do not upload identification, contracts, vehicle documents or a grant reference into a public planning tool.
Keep an application checklist separately from the electrical survey brief. The former supports the official eligibility decision; the latter describes the charger location, supply and route that need assessment. If evidence or permission is missing, resolve it before treating the project as grant-ready. A first installation enquiry can describe the arrangement without sending copies of private documents.
Wait for OZEV eligibility notification
GOV.UK's platform-change guidance says the chargepoint must not be installed until OZEV notifies the customer that they are eligible. It initially estimates up to 10 working days for assessment of applications and claims, not a guaranteed turnaround. Missing evidence or processing demand may affect progress. Check official status communications, then agree the installation stage only when the required gate and other permissions have been met.
How much will you still pay?
Ask for the full installation quotation, the eligible grant basis, the proposed award and the amount remaining separately. The cap does not make every item eligible, and a grant application does not fix the electrical scope. Cable routing, groundworks, supply changes and other additional work need their own written treatment. Check VAT and the actual payable total with the installer. Use the home EV charger installation cost guide for quote comparisons; the grant figures here are government support, not TRACEFORM prices.
What should you check with a Manchester installer?
Confirm current OZEV installer authorisation and the proposed equipment's eligibility for the route. NICEIC registration is not evidence of OZEV authorisation. TRACEFORM's grant-related role must be verified for your particular project; this guide does not claim that status. A suitable electrical survey is still needed, whatever the application outcome.
Agree the charger, cable route, groundworks, supply assessment, required permissions, testing and handover scope in writing. Ask who manages the grant communications and which event permits installation to begin. If additional consumer-unit work is necessary, keep that scope distinct rather than treating it as automatically included or grant-funded. Manchester and Stockport area links support a location enquiry, not a promise of grant approval or a particular installation date.

Which official grant route should you investigate?
Match the applicant and parking arrangement first. Each route still needs its current evidence, permissions and timing checks; this table does not establish entitlement.
| Your arrangement | Official route | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Renter with private off-street parking | Resident grant: 75% of eligible costs, maximum £500; one socket. | Eligible vehicle, parking rights, permission, prior award and eligibility notification. |
| Owner living in a flat with an allocated bay | Investigate the resident route; an allocation alone is not approval. | Property category, rights over the space and shared-area consent. |
| Ordinary owner-occupied house with driveway | Not the renters-and-flat-owners route merely because you own an EV. | Check GOV.UK exclusions and any relevant converted-flat exception. |
| Residential landlord | Separate landlord route: up to 200 sockets across sites, maximum £500 per socket. | Correct applicant, scheme conditions and current application process. |
| Household using on-street parking | Separate cross-pavement route, up to £500 subject to current conditions. | Qualifying solution and highway permissions; not a loose pavement cable. |
Verdict. Use the linked GOV.UK eligibility and scheme pages for the actual application. Resolve evidence and consent before relying on funding.

Step by step
Identify the applicant and route
Use the official resident, landlord or on-street scheme pages. Check property type and any previous award rather than assuming every EV owner qualifies.
Resolve parking rights and consent
Clarify the bay, cable route and relevant landlord, freeholder or highway permissions. Do not treat parking access as permission to alter shared land.
Prepare the official evidence
Gather the requested property, parking and vehicle evidence privately. Check the six-month requirement where the relevant vehicle category applies.
Check installer, equipment and quotation
Verify current scheme authorisation and equipment eligibility. Separate full costs, eligible costs, proposed award and additional electrical work.
Apply and wait for notification
Follow the current application process. For the resident route, do not install until OZEV has notified you that you are eligible; assessment timing is not guaranteed.
Agree installation and retain records
After the required gate and permissions, agree a survey-dependent installation scope. Keep official communications and the agreed handover records privately.
Find your grant route
Select your arrangement, then check the official route and missing evidence. The grant-routes table provides a text equivalent with source links.
Guidance only, not an eligibility decision. Do not enter personal documents or application references. Current GOV.UK rules and OZEV notification control the process.

Frequently asked questions
Is the EV charger grant £350 or £500 in 2026?
The relevant residential cap became £500 from 1 April 2026. For qualifying renters and flat owners, the award is still limited to 75% of eligible buying and installation costs. An older article showing £350 may describe previous arrangements. Check the live GOV.UK route and application rules rather than assuming the maximum will be awarded.
Can I get a grant if I own a house with a driveway?
Owning an electric car and a driveway does not qualify an ordinary owner-occupied house for the renters-and-flat-owners scheme. GOV.UK describes a converted-flat exception, so check the actual property category. The separate on-street route has different conditions; it is not an alternative simply because a driveway installation is expensive.
Can I apply if I rent my home?
A residential renter may qualify with suitable private off-street parking, an eligible vehicle and the required permissions. Lodgers living with their landlord are excluded from this resident route. Prepare tenancy, parking and vehicle evidence as requested by GOV.UK, then follow the current application process. Permission and eligibility must both be established.
Can I get a charger grant without off-street parking?
Qualifying households using on-street parking can investigate the separate cross-pavement route listed by GOV.UK. It requires an eligible charging solution and the relevant local permissions, not a loose cable across the pavement. Check current scheme terms and highway consent before buying equipment or agreeing work; no driveway alone does not establish entitlement.
Can the charger be installed before my grant is approved?
For the current resident process, GOV.UK says the chargepoint must not be installed until OZEV notifies the customer that they are eligible. An installer quotation or verbal assurance does not meet that gate. Keep the official notification and confirm other permissions and scheme requirements before agreeing the installation stage.
How long does an EV charger grant decision take?
The government's platform-change guidance initially estimates up to 10 working days to assess applications and claims. That is not a guaranteed deadline for your decision. Missing evidence or demand can affect progress. Follow official status communications and do not install while waiting for the required OZEV eligibility notification.
