Our electrics kept tripping and we had no idea why. He found the faulty socket and sorted it on the same visit. Really pleased, thanks again 👍

Video door entry installation in Manchester with TRACEFORM starts with your entrance and the kit you have. A home video doorbell and an intercom for several flats call different places. They also need different cabling and management. We check the power, connection and the functions you want before we agree the equipment. Account handover, model-dependent recording and a privacy-aware view are part of the scope from the start.
Choose the entrance, then specify its functions
A home video doorbell usually lets you see and speak to a visitor. A door-entry system can send calls to chosen places and work an agreed entrance release. Neither one automatically includes recording, mobile answering or lock control. Write down the visitor journey from call to answer. Then list the optional release and recording stages apart. This makes equipment choices and quotes easier to compare.
A wired doorbell for one household
When comparing wired vs wireless video doorbell options, share the model, fitting details and preferred position before you buy. We need to check your existing chime, supply and cables. No single transformer suits every video doorbell. We can also fit a compatible doorbell you have already bought. 'Wired' may only refer to power. Ask which functions need Wi-Fi, an app or a cloud service.
Calls from one panel to separate flats
For a shared entrance, list the unit destinations, answering devices and who may release the door. Get the owner or manager's permission before you change shared equipment. The managing party should agree resident account changes, maintenance access and who runs the admin. We confirm accessibility and the entrance layout at the survey. An existing panel does not prove a new system can use every cable or handset.
Can existing intercom wiring be reused?
An audio-to-video upgrade may be possible. But any wiring and parts you keep must suit the new equipment. Give us the panel and handset models, unit count, known faults and any installation records. The survey shows what can stay and what needs replacing, including power, network and door interfaces. Do not order equipment on a promise that old cables will work without a check. Agree any extra electrical work and making good before you accept the price.
Internet, recording and subscriptions
Check the chosen model separately for visitor calls, indoor answering, mobile alerts, release and recording. A local handset may rely on different things than an app or cloud recording account. Ask what still works without internet, what changes in a power cut and how users spot a fault. Cloud storage, remote access and subscriptions should be listed one by one. Include optional services, recurring fees and the account that pays them. We assume no standard subscription amount or offline use.
Position the camera with privacy in mind
Point the view at the entrance and think about next-door doors, shared corridors and the pavement. ICO home guidance says recording beyond your property boundary brings data-protection duties. Such recording is not automatically illegal. Avoid capturing more than you need. Think about masking and whether you need audio. Tell affected people about recording. Keep footage only as long as your stated purpose needs. There is no universal legal retention period to set as a default.
Shared or commercial premises need their own check of lawful use, privacy risks, notices, storage, access and rights requests. The ICO's commercial smart-doorbell guidance calls for a lawful-basis and DPIA assessment. It also warns that the guidance is under review after changes in the law. The managing organisation should own day-to-day duties. Fitting the system does not make it legally compliant for good. Our home privacy guide and business checklist explain these duties in more detail.
Door release, escape and power interruptions
A release function links to the real entrance and lock. It is more than a button on a screen. Review how it works with the building manager and the fire-risk assessment for those premises. GOV.UK's offices and shops guidance shows the need for suitable escape. It does not set one design for all residential blocks. Agree what happens in a power cut and any backup. Do not assume a lock always releases or always stays locked.
Relevant mains electrical work needs proper design, inspection and testing. Under Approved Document P, notification in England depends on the electrical scope, such as a new circuit. Whether a product has video makes no difference. Agree the installation records and any notification duty in the quote. Power and data needs come from the maker's instructions for your model. We do not claim a standard voltage or fitting time.
Own the account and practise the visitor journey
At handover, we show a visitor call to each agreed destination, plus answering and any authorised release. We check recording retrieval or export only where it is included. Then we review the stated connection and power-cut behaviour. The homeowner or managing organisation should hold the accounts and admin rights. Where suitable, we remove installer access that is not needed. We note how authorised upkeep will be arranged. Keep the kit models, user guides and agreed set-up records for future residents or managers.
Key facts before you plan
ICO guidance says domestic recording beyond the property boundary brings data-protection responsibilities. Capturing the pavement is not automatically prohibited; audio also matters.

Which entrance functions belong in your quotation?
Visitor calling, answering, door release and recording are separate functions. Confirm who owns each, its kit and what it needs. No product description guarantees offline use or safe escape.
| Function | Household questions | Shared-entrance questions |
|---|---|---|
| Call | Where is the button and who receives the call? | Which unit is called and how is each destination identified? |
| Answer | Indoor screen, handset or mobile app; what needs internet? | Which devices serve each resident and who manages changes? |
| Release | Is release actually requested and compatible with the entrance? | Who may release the door, and how is escape and power loss reviewed? |
| Record | Is storage included, who owns the account and what is captured? | Who governs purpose, access, retention and requests for footage? |
Our reading: Use the actual model and a site check to confirm power, data links, fees and offline behaviour. A shared release needs a proper escape review. Recording needs its own privacy check.

How a planned project runs
Describe the entrance and authority
Share your postcode and entrance type. List unit destinations, current models and the functions you need. For shared premises, name the authorised owner or manager.
Assess retained equipment and dependencies
We check cables, supply, chime, connection and door links against the proposed model. Reusing wiring and offline use both depend on this check.
Agree functions, privacy and escape review
List call, answer, release and recording. Confirm camera view, audio, account owner and recurring fees. Agree the release and outage plan for the building.
Install and configure the defined system
We fit the agreed equipment, power, cables and setup. We record changes and keep any extra electrical or finishing work apart from the entry device.
Demonstrate and hand over ownership
We test the visitor journey, check agreed destinations and explain how your model works offline. We hand over records, admin and service duties to the right owner.

Build an entrance-function brief
Choose the entrance and required functions, then identify what needs a survey or manufacturer confirmation. Calling, answering, releasing and recording remain separate lines in the quotation.
Planning aid only, not product approval, a lock design or a privacy verdict. Actual wiring, power, offline behaviour and escape need model and site review. Do not enter passwords, access codes or residents' personal details.

- Share safe external photos and models; do not open mains equipment.
- Confirm authority before modifying a shared entrance.
- Check power, chime, wiring and data links against your model.
- Agree how release works in a power cut with whoever runs the building.
- Avoid needless views and check privacy duties for recording and audio.
- Confirm administrator ownership, fees and agreed installer access.
- Use premises-specific escape assessment, not a generic lock assumption.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a video doorbell and a door-entry system?
A video doorbell commonly lets a household see and speak to visitors. A door-entry system can route calls to selected destinations and operate an agreed entrance release. Recording, mobile access and lock control are distinct options. Describe each required function in the quotation, rather than assuming any video device provides the same visitor journey.
How much does video door-entry installation cost?
Video door entry for a house typically costs £610–£1,360; a video intercom for a small block is £375–£740 per flat, and a wired video doorbell supplied and fitted is £185–£435. Retained cabling, release hardware and the number of handsets set the final figure, which we confirm in a written quote after the survey.
Can you upgrade an existing audio intercom to video?
Potentially, if the proposed equipment suits the installation and anything being retained. Share panel and handset models, unit details and known faults before ordering. Cabling reuse needs assessment, not a remote promise. Shared entrances also need the relevant managing authority's agreement, with the replacement scope and residents' answering arrangements established in advance.
Does a wired video doorbell still need Wi-Fi?
It can. Wired may describe only the power supply, while app alerts, remote answering or cloud recording rely on internet connectivity. Other equipment can use wired networks or local handsets. Check the actual model and list which functions continue without internet; neither the word wired nor the presence of a chime establishes that behaviour.
Can one entry panel serve several flats?
Yes, with a suitable system designed for the required destinations and entrance. Assess unit count, cabling, answering devices, authorised release and administration. The owner or manager should confirm permissions, future resident changes, privacy responsibilities and maintenance access. One existing panel does not establish that every retained component will support the proposed replacement.
Can my video doorbell record the pavement or neighbours?
ICO home guidance says recording beyond the property boundary brings data-protection responsibilities, rather than an automatic prohibition. Minimise unnecessary capture, explain recording and keep footage only as needed for its purpose. Audio requires consideration too. Shared or commercial premises need their own lawful-use, access and privacy-risk assessment instead of assuming ordinary household arrangements apply.
Are cloud recording and subscriptions included?
Only if the agreed scope and service terms include them. Answering, alerts, recorded storage and remote access can have different dependencies or charges. Confirm the product's optional subscriptions, payment basis and account owner before booking. At handover, the appropriate homeowner or managing organisation should hold administration, with unnecessary installer access removed where appropriate.
What happens to the entrance during a power cut?
That depends on the actual power supply, release equipment and escape arrangement. Do not assume calling continues or that the door always locks or unlocks in a particular way. Review outage behaviour and any proposed backup with the installer and responsible building manager against the premises-specific fire-risk assessment, then document and demonstrate the agreed operation.
