Consumer Unit Replacement Cost: UK and Manchester Guide

What a new fuse board costs depends on the circuits it protects, the protection it needs and any defects found on the way, not on the retail price of the box.

Compare the new fuse box cost alongside any remedial work, and confirm which completion records are included.

Short answer

What does a consumer unit replacement cost?

Consumer unit replacement cost is £450–£800 in Checkatrade's UK guide; Total Skills lists fitted RCBO boards at £500–£1,000. These are independent estimates, not TRACEFORM prices. Circuit count, protection and remedials change the total. Confirm VAT, assessment, installation, testing, the Electrical Installation Certificate and required notification.

A fair consumer unit replacement cost should cover an installed, tested result and clearly identify any separate remedial work. Use these dated third-party estimates to question the scope, not to assume a fixed TRACEFORM tariff. Ask for the board specification, retained circuits, testing, notification and payable total in a property-specific written quotation.

Worth knowing first

Key facts

  1. Checkatrade's May 2026 UK table gives £450–£800 for fuse-box replacement. Specification and VAT need confirmation.

    Checkatrade: UK electrician task prices
  2. Total Skills lists fitted RCBO boards at £500–£1,000 with testing, EIC and notification in its scope. VAT needs checking.

    Total Skills: Fitted consumer-unit comparisons
  3. Manchester's £460–£692 directory range covers mixed fuseboard installation jobs, not a specified replacement package.

    Checkatrade: Manchester electrical price context
  4. Domestic consumer-unit replacement is notifiable in England. Electrical certification and the Building Regulations record are distinct.

    NICEIC: Consumer units and notification
  5. New or replacement domestic units require non-combustible enclosure arrangements. Existing plastic units are not automatically condemned by appearance.

Side by side

Why do consumer-unit quotations describe different totals?

Board design, existing-condition work and completion records are separate parts of the scope. Compare them before comparing the price.

Scope itemDifference to checkQuestion for the contractor
RCBO or dual RCDDifferent circuit-protection arrangements.Which devices protect each circuit and why?
Supply only or fittedRetail equipment excludes installation and testing.Does the total cover a completed installation?
Existing defectsRemedials may be included, conditional or excluded. What needs assessment and who approves variations?
EIC and notificationElectrical and Building Regulations records differ.Who supplies each required record?

Choose an assessed specification with explicit exclusions and approval points. A guide average cannot validate the design or diagnose retained circuits.

What should the replacement price include?

Request a defined outcome rather than a box price: assessment of the relevant installation, the proposed board and devices, fitting, circuit identification, inspection and testing, and completion records. State whether removal and disposal of the old equipment are included. Manchester directory figures lack a controlled specification, so they cannot establish what any individual quote should contain.

Assessment, board, protective devices and circuit labelling

The contractor should identify the circuits to be connected and explain the proposed protection. Future demand, such as a charger or new appliance circuit, is worth discussing before the board is selected. It is not automatically included in replacement work. External photographs and old reports help preparation, but do not establish circuit condition or allow a reliable remote safety verdict.

EIC and Building Regulations notification

The Electrical Installation Certificate records the completed electrical installation work and associated verification. The Building Regulations compliance record relates to notification through the relevant route. An EICR instead reports condition; it is not the replacement installation certificate. NICEIC explains competent-person scheme and Building Control routes for notifiable work in England. Ask who handles notification and which records you should retain.

RCBO, dual RCD and surge protection: what changes the cost?

RCBO protection combines residual-current and overcurrent functions for individual circuits; a dual-RCD arrangement groups circuits differently. The practical fault-isolation arrangements and device schedules are therefore not identical. Total Skills' fitted ranges provide comparison context, not a universal recommendation. Ask the electrician to explain the proposed design and why a competing quote specifies different devices.

Surge protection and AFDD requirements must be addressed for the actual installation and applicable standard. This guide does not assign a universal surcharge, mandate every device in every property or offer an automatic opt-out rule. IET lists the A4:2026 edition and the predecessor transition ending on 15 October 2026. Have the reviewing electrician identify the edition and design basis used for your work.

When does existing wiring increase the quotation?

Earthing, bonding, damaged circuits and previously concealed defects can create work beyond changing the board. Agree how findings will be reported, which remedials are already allowed for and who can authorise variations. The quote should distinguish necessary work from optional improvements. There is no sourced Manchester remedial surcharge here, so do not add a guessed allowance as if it were a contractor's price.

Access also affects assessment and testing. Explain locked rooms, tenants, fitted furniture and restrictions around the board. A contractor may need access to relevant parts of the installation, not just the enclosure. If a condition cannot be established before work, ask for the assumption and its variation process in writing instead of accepting an unexplained open-ended extra.

Does an old or plastic fuse box need replacing?

For metal consumer unit regulations, consult IET's enclosure guidance on new and replacement domestic equipment. It does not make every retained plastic enclosure automatically unsafe solely because it is plastic. Condition, location, protection and proposed alterations need assessment. Report damage, overheating or recurring faults and seek professional advice; do not open the board to inspect it or treat appearance as an installation test.

Can you replace the consumer unit without a rewire?

A board replacement and a rewire are separate scopes. Suitable retained circuits may remain, while identified defects may need targeted work or a wider renewal discussion. Ask for the assessment findings and an explicit list of circuits retained, repaired or replaced. The linked rewire-decision guide explains that assessment without turning a fuse-box budget into a remote diagnosis.

How long does replacement take and will power be off?

Plan for an agreed supply interruption and a survey-dependent programme. Assessment, fitting, testing and resolving defects are not the same as the isolation period. Tell the contractor about essential medical equipment, refrigeration, home working and security systems. Confirm any contingency arrangements before the visit; this guide cannot guarantee an outage duration or certificate delivery date.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a consumer unit?

Checkatrade gives £450–£800 for a general UK replacement, while Total Skills lists fitted RCBO boards at £500–£1,000. These independent estimates do not establish TRACEFORM's price or a property's specification. Compare circuit count, devices, existing-condition work, testing and records, then confirm the VAT-inclusive payable total with the contractor.

Can I upgrade just the consumer unit without a full rewire?

That may be possible where assessment and testing establish that retained circuits are suitable. Changing the board does not replace their cables or resolve every defect. Ask which circuits will remain, which require remedial work and why. A separate partial or full rewire decision should follow the findings, not the enclosure's appearance.

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

Agree a survey-dependent visit and isolation plan rather than relying on a generic working-day estimate. Circuit access, testing and unexpected defects can affect the programme. Explain any essential equipment and occupancy restrictions before booking. Physical fitting time and the period without power are different, and neither is guaranteed by this guide.

Do I need building regulations approval?

Consumer-unit replacement in an English home is notifiable work. A suitably registered competent-person installer can use their scheme; a Building Control route also exists. Ask which route applies and who handles it. Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate and the relevant Building Regulations compliance record together, as they document different aspects of the work.

Does a plastic consumer unit have to be replaced?

Plastic construction alone is not a remote verdict that an existing unit must be replaced. The requirements for new or replacement equipment and the assessment of retained equipment are different questions. Condition, location and protection matter. Arrange professional assessment and report concerns without opening the enclosure or attempting to inspect live parts.

Is a DIY consumer unit swap a legal way to save money?

Use a qualified electrician for the design, safe isolation, circuit assessment, connection and testing, with the appropriate notification route. This is not suitable DIY work. Do not remove the distributor's main fuse or assume the board's main switch makes incoming connections safe. An online scope checklist cannot replace competence or verification.

How do I know whether a consumer-unit quote is reasonable?

Compare another written quotation for the same board model, circuit count, device schedule, testing and records. Check remedials, exclusions, disposal, VAT and variation approval. If specifications differ, ask why before comparing totals. A market average cannot determine fairness when the existing wiring condition or the included protection and work are unknown.
