Our electrics kept tripping and we had no idea why. He found the faulty socket and sorted it on the same visit. Really pleased, thanks again 👍

At TRACEFORM, we plan solar panels and battery storage in Manchester homes around the property and how you use power. A new PV system, solar with storage and a battery added to an old system each need different equipment, access and checks. We look at your starting point before we write a proposal. Compare forecasts using the same home details. Keep usable energy, power output and designed backup apart.
Your three starting points
Solar-only can power your home while the panels generate. Eligible surplus is exported. A battery changes when you can use some of that energy. It also adds equipment, cost, controls and losses. A retrofit starts with your existing PV system, so the fit and the cost of any changes matter. Compare every option using the same home use and tariff figures. You can install solar without a battery. A bigger system is not always the best choice.
Adding storage to existing solar
Send your inverter model, PV details, commissioning records and any warranty papers you have. An AC-coupled set-up may keep your working solar inverter. Another design may need different equipment. The proposal should show which parts stay, who controls charging and export, and any effect on warranties. Do not buy a battery just because its stated size seems to match a day's use. We must also check for a safe spot, a good fit and the wider installation.
Does the roof and household routine suit solar?
Panels generate from daylight, even on cloudy days. Output depends on which way the roof faces, shade, roof space and local weather. We also check roof condition, structure, access and any permissions. Share your electricity use. Tell us if you are home in the day, when big appliances run and if you plan an EV or heat pump. A rated kWp figure does not tell you yearly output. A sunny-day demo is no guide to your home's year.
Battery capacity, power and backup are different
Usable capacity, in kWh, is the energy you can use within the equipment's limits. Charge and discharge power, in kW, is how fast energy can flow in or out. Compare both, along with efficiency, controls and your expected use. Capacity alone does not show if several appliances can run at once. The site check must also cover where the kit goes, access, airflow and fire risk. It should not rely on one clearance rule for every home.
Do not assume standard grid-connected solar or storage will keep your home powered in a power cut. Any backup proposal should list the circuits it covers, how it isolates and switches, its limits and how you use it. Whole-home backup and selected-circuit backup cover different things. Ask for the maker's documents and the actual backup design. A battery symbol or app setting is no outage guarantee.
VAT relief, local funding and export payments
HMRC's domestic energy-saving relief gives 0% VAT on qualifying solar and battery installations until 31 March 2027. Under current rules, 5% applies after that. Check you qualify and how your quote treats tax. Supply-only equipment may be treated differently. VAT relief is not a cash grant. Warm Homes: Local Grant is run by local councils for eligible privately owned homes in England. Checks on the household, home, survey and funding decide what is offered. There is no fixed solar award for every Manchester applicant.
Ofgem's Smart Export Guarantee pays for eligible metered exports. Each supplier sets its own tariffs and terms. It is separate from buying the system or getting council funding. At handover, you get the certification and commissioning records your chosen supplier asks for. We explain how to apply so export payments can start.
Grid connection and commissioning responsibilities
Your inverter, battery and total generation decide which network route applies. ENWL's G98 guidance for a qualifying single home allows up to 16 A per phase, with notice within 28 days of commissioning. That 16 A figure is no general limit on panel ratings. Other proposals may need the G99 process. Agree who prepares forms or notices, supplies equipment evidence and deals with network conditions. Do not assume approval dates. Do not assume storage can be added without checking the existing connection.
The IET published its Amendment 4 announcement on 15 April 2026. It sets out a six-month move from the previous edition. The designer must state which BS 7671 edition applies to your project. They must also state its rules for stationary batteries. Keep commissioning records, electrical documents, network letters, product details and monitoring ownership in one place. Agree which certificates the installer will provide. A registration logo is no substitute for a written handover.
Compare savings assumptions before deciding
Use the same yearly generation, home use and tariffs for each proposal. List direct self-use, energy sent to storage, battery losses, remaining imports and exports apart. Stored solar may cut later imports but can reduce paid exports. Do not count both gains on the same unit of energy. Include running charges, upkeep and possible replacements. Energy Saving Trust's Manchester solar-only examples are 10 years for home-all-day or half-day households and 11 years for out-all-day households, using July 2026 fuel assumptions. They do not cover combined systems.
The comparison planner records your own estimates. It does not fill in made-up generation or tariff figures. A yearly model cannot show seasonal output, time-of-use charging value or how long backup will last. Our Manchester payback guide goes further into the costs. For planned future loads, see the EV charger service and cost guide. Consumer-unit costs only matter if our check finds changes are needed. Not every solar project needs a new board.
Key facts before you plan

How a planned project runs
Share use and existing-system information
Send your postcode, electricity use, future equipment plans and any existing PV inverter and commissioning details. Take safe photos. Do not go on the roof or open equipment.
Survey the roof and equipment locations
We check the roof, shade, access, permissions and electrical work. We look at where the battery and inverter go, room for upkeep and how it will connect.
Compare the complete options
Compare solar-only, combined or retrofit proposals on the same use and tariffs. Check usable capacity and power limits. See what backup is included and what the quote leaves out.
Agree the network and export paperwork
We identify the DNO process for your system, who submits it and the records you need for an export tariff. Network approvals and funding decisions rest with the DNO and the funder, and we keep you updated on both.
Install and commission the agreed system
The written scope should cover access or scaffold, equipment, electrical changes and commissioning. Record any changes. Do not assume roof or board work is included unless listed.
Hand over records and monitoring
Check who owns the monitoring. Check the controls, product papers, electrical certificates and network records. Review any designed backup. Agree who applies for the export tariff.

Which solar or storage option should the survey compare?
Compare solar-only, combined and battery retrofit options using the same home's use and tariffs. Backup needs its own design. Do not assume it from battery size.
| Option | Evidence to gather | Scope to settle |
|---|---|---|
| New solar-only | Roof condition, shading, orientation and electricity-use pattern. | PV forecast, roof access, electrical work and grid/export responsibilities. |
| New solar and battery | The same roof and demand evidence, plus likely surplus and later demand. | Usable capacity, power, efficiency, controls, safe location and added costs. |
| Retrofit battery | Existing inverter models, commissioning records and warranty information. | AC/DC arrangement, retained components, connection review and compatibility. |
| Requested outage backup | Essential loads and actual manufacturer's capabilities. | Supported circuits, switching, isolation and operating limits in an explicit design. |

Frequently asked questions
Do solar panels work on cloudy days in Manchester?
Yes, panels generate from daylight, although cloud, shading and other conditions change output. A useful annual forecast considers the actual roof orientation and local conditions rather than one sunny-day demonstration. Rated system power is not a year-round output promise. Ask the proposal to record its generation assumptions and the assessment of roof suitability.
How much do solar panels and a battery cost?
A 4 kWp solar system typically costs £6,120–£8,160, a 5 kWh battery added to existing panels £3,060–£5,100, and the two together £9,180–£12,240. Roof access, scaffold, inverter choice and any electrical alterations set the final figure, which we confirm in a written quote after the roof and equipment survey.
Do I have to install a battery with solar panels?
No. Compare solar-only with storage using the same generation, household-use timing and tariffs. A battery can shift some energy to later use, but introduces cost, losses, controls and potential replacement expenses. Lost export income also matters. Usable capacity and discharge power help assess suitability; neither establishes that storage is the better financial choice.
Can I add a battery to existing solar panels?
Potentially, after assessment of the inverter, electrical installation and a compatible design. An AC-coupled option may retain the existing solar inverter, while other arrangements can require changes. Share model details, commissioning documents and warranty information. The proposal should state retained equipment, control arrangements, grid requirements and any implications for existing guarantees.
Will my solar battery keep the house running in a power cut?
Only an explicitly designed backup arrangement should be relied on. Ordinary grid-connected PV or storage does not establish power-cut operation. Ask which circuits are supported, how isolation and switching work, and the equipment's delivery limits. Whole-home backup is a different scope from selected essential circuits and cannot be inferred from a battery's capacity.
What size home battery do I need?
There is no universal answer. The design needs household consumption timing, available solar surplus, tariff plans and equipment limits. Compare usable kWh with charge and discharge kW, efficiency and controls. A large nominal capacity does not mean every appliance can run simultaneously. Backup requirements and safe equipment location also need separate assessment.
Is there a grant for solar panels in Manchester?
Warm Homes: Local Grant may fund agreed improvements through local authorities for eligible homes, including solar where the assessed measures support it. Check the actual household, property and available delivery arrangements. VAT relief and SEG export payments are separate from grant funding. No fixed solar grant amount or approval is promised for every Manchester applicant.
Who handles grid connection and export payments?
The written scope should name who handles the relevant DNO application or notification and provides commissioning evidence. G98 or G99 requirements depend on the proposed system, including storage and aggregate generation. Export payments need a separate eligible supplier tariff arrangement with the required evidence. They do not begin automatically just because panels have been installed.
