What to report without investigating
Tell us where the smell seems strongest, when it started, what was running, whether a socket, switch, cable or consumer unit looks discoloured, and whether any protection operated. Do not sniff close to equipment, touch a hot faceplate, remove covers or re-energise an item to recreate the symptom.
Burning smell from a plug socket

Why prompt assessment matters
Overheating can worsen under load and visible damage may be only part of the problem. The source might be connected equipment, an accessory, a termination, a circuit or distribution equipment. Cooling down does not prove that it is safe to use again, and a smell that has disappeared still warrants attention if there was heat, melting or scorching.

The electrician assesses immediate risk, identifies the likely source, isolates affected equipment or circuits and tests as appropriate. Where damage is localised and a safe repair is possible, it may be completed. Wider heat damage, inaccessible wiring or unavailable parts can require continued isolation and follow-on work.
Residential and commercial considerations
At home, keep children and pets away and do not rely on the fitting after it cools. In a workplace, prevent staff or customers from using the area, identify equipment that was under load and preserve safe access for the electrician. Commercial documentation depends on the work and tests completed; the priority during an urgent visit is to identify and control the hazard.
After the source is found
You will be told what caused or contributed to the heat where it can be established, what has been repaired or isolated, and what must remain out of use. Any broader inspection or remedial work should be separately explained. Never resume use solely because the smell has cleared.
