Why does an RCD keep tripping?

An RCD keeps tripping when it detects current leaking from its intended path. The cause may be connected equipment, moisture, damaged wiring, an outdoor circuit or the protective device. Note when the trip happens and what was running, but do not keep resetting an RCD that will not remain on.

Describe what you are seeing

A protective device that trips repeatedly is responding to a condition that needs attention; forcing it back on is not a repair. An RCD usually monitors leakage or imbalance across a group of circuits, while an MCB or circuit breaker protects an individual circuit against overcurrent and short-circuit conditions. The labels and layout vary, so do not guess or remove the cover. TRACEFORM offers 24/7 assessment to identify the device, affected circuit and underlying fault.

RCD versus MCB: why the distinction helps

An RCD may disconnect several circuits together because it detects leakage to earth, often caused by damaged cables, moisture or faulty equipment. An MCB usually operates on a specific circuit when there is an overload or short circuit. Understanding the difference helps our electricians run the right tests, locate the cause faster and recommend the correct repair.

Signs that require prompt help

Call us promptly if a device trips repeatedly, trips with everything apparently off, is worse in wet weather, follows water ingress, or is accompanied by burning smells, buzzing, discoloration or visible damage. These symptoms can indicate a fault that may be unsafe and should be inspected by a qualified electrician.

What the electrician checks

Diagnosis starts with the pattern: which device operated, when, what circuits went off and what was being used. We then carry out visual inspections, insulation and continuity tests, earth fault loop testing and RCD functionality tests to identify the cause without leaving the circuit energised unnecessarily.

Different priorities in homes and workplaces

In a home, one faulty appliance or outdoor circuit may affect several rooms. In commercial premises, shared RCD protection can interrupt tills, workstations or catering equipment, and unplanned resets can risk operations. We tailor our approach to the environment, prioritising safety and minimal disruption.

Repair, isolation and next steps

After testing, we explain whether the issue is linked to equipment, a circuit, an accessory, moisture, protection or another cause. A repair may be possible during attendance. Otherwise, the affected item or circuit can be safely isolated with a clear explanation of restrictions and agreed follow-on work.

Safety Notice

Never bypass protection, remove the consumer-unit cover or repeatedly reset a device that trips. If an RCD or MCB keeps tripping, there may be a serious fault that needs professional investigation.

What happens when you call

From your first call to a clear explanation of the fault.

  1. Read the device label

Without opening the board, note whether the operated device is marked RCD, RCBO or MCB and which circuits have lost power.

  2. Separate loads from wiring

Portable equipment and fixed circuits are divided methodically so testing can show whether leakage follows an appliance or remains in the installation.

  3. Measure and confirm

Insulation resistance and protective-device tests confirm the affected path before a repair, continued isolation or device replacement is agreed.

RCD tripping every evening in a Chorlton terrace
Chorlton, M21 Evening callout, 2 hours

RCD tripping every evening in a Chorlton terrace

Problem
The main RCD tripped most evenings between 7 and 9 pm, taking out the kitchen and downstairs sockets. Resetting worked for a while, then it went again.
Cause
Insulation resistance testing showed leakage on the kitchen ring. The heating element in an integrated dishwasher had degraded and leaked to earth only once it was hot — which is why it tripped at dinner time.
Fix
The appliance was isolated and confirmed as the source, the ring was retested clean, and the customer was left with a written result to give the appliance repairer.

No further trips. The rest of the installation was proven sound the same visit.

Outdoor socket tripping the whole board after rain
Horwich, Bolton, BL6 Next-morning visit, 90 minutes

Outdoor socket tripping the whole board after rain

Problem
Every time it rained heavily the RCD dropped out, sometimes overnight, leaving the fridge-freezer off until morning.
Cause
A garden socket had been fitted with an indoor-rated back box and a cracked gasket. Water tracked down the cable and pooled behind the faceplate, causing earth leakage.
Fix
The socket was replaced with a properly sealed IP66 outdoor unit on its own RCBO, so a future fault would only affect that circuit rather than the whole property.

Three wet weeks later, still holding. The house no longer loses the freezer when the garden circuit faults.

Why choose TRACEFORM?

A thorough, professional approach that finds the real cause — not just a temporary fix.

Trip pattern assessed

We analyse when, how often and under what conditions the RCD or MCB trips, helping to identify safe, repeatable tests.

Leakage investigated

We carry out targeted testing to find insulation or earth leakage faults without unnecessary resets or guesswork.

Protection respected

Your safety devices are never bypassed. We diagnose and test in line with regulations and best practice.

RCD and MCB diagnosis

Identify the device, affected circuits and pattern of trips.

Leave repeated trips off

A device that will not hold is not repeatedly re-energised while the cause remains unknown.

Match load to trip

Note which RCD or MCB operates and what equipment was running immediately beforehand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about RCDs, MCBs and tripping issues.

Should I keep resetting an RCD that keeps tripping?
No. Repeated resets can re-energise a fault and obscure the pattern. Leave it off if it will not remain on or if there are danger signs, and seek professional help.
Does RCD tripping always mean an appliance is faulty?
No. Connected equipment is one possibility, but circuit wiring, outdoor equipment, moisture, accessories or the protective device may be involved. Testing is needed to establish the cause.
Can RCD or MCB tripping turn off the whole property?
Usually an MCB serves one circuit, whereas an RCD may cover several, but arrangements vary. Combined devices and upstream protection can change what loses power.
How much does it cost to find out why an RCD keeps tripping?
Diagnosis is charged for the time on site, and most RCD faults are located within the first visit. We confirm the callout rate and any minimum charge before attending, and tell you the cost of a repair before starting it.
Can I repair an RCD tripping fault myself?
You can safely unplug appliances one at a time to see whether a portable item is causing it. Anything beyond that — opening the consumer unit, testing circuits or replacing devices — must be done by a qualified electrician, because it involves live parts and insulation testing.
When is an RCD tripping fault dangerous?
The trip itself is the RCD doing its job. The danger is what caused it: a leakage path through damaged insulation, water or a faulty appliance. Repeated resetting keeps re-energising that fault, so treat frequent trips as something to investigate promptly rather than live with.
Why does RCD tripping occur without an MCB operating?
An RCD detects current leaking to earth, while an MCB reacts to overload or a short circuit. Earth leakage can be small and steady, so it never draws enough current to operate the breaker but is easily enough to trip a 30 mA RCD.
