Water Near Electrical Equipment: What Should You Do?

Water near electrical equipment requires distance: do not enter standing water or touch wet sockets, switches, cables or metalwork. Keep everyone away. If there is fire, smoke, electric-shock injury or immediate danger, leave and call 999. What should I do when water is near electrical equipment?

Water near electrical equipment, whether a ceiling leak, wet socket or flooded room, can cause shock or fire. Do not enter standing water or touch wet switches, plugs or the consumer unit. Why water near electrics is dangerous

Water can enter accessories, appliances and wiring, create conductive paths and damage insulation. The visible wet patch may be only part of the affected area.

Keep away and isolate only when safe

Water can conduct electricity and can make nearby fittings, appliances and metalwork dangerous to touch. Keep children, pets, residents and staff away from the affected area. Never step into standing water to reach a plug, socket, appliance or consumer unit, and never touch exposed conductors.

If the main switch or relevant socket is in a dry, undamaged area that you can reach without approaching the hazard, switch it off. If reaching it means crossing water or going near wet equipment, do not attempt isolation yourself. Stop the water source only when its valve is safely accessible outside the electrical risk area.

Only isolate power when the control is dry, undamaged and reachable without crossing the affected area.

Dry-looking equipment may still be unsafe

A socket, light fitting or appliance can appear dry while moisture remains inside terminals, insulation or cable routes. Floodwater may also leave conductive contamination behind. Do not restore power, reset a tripped RCD or reconnect equipment simply because the visible surface has dried.

A plumber can stop and repair the leak, but an electrician should assess electrical equipment and circuits that may have been exposed. Inspection and suitable testing establish whether an item can return to service, needs further drying or cleaning, or must be repaired or replaced.

A dry surface does not prove that terminals, cables or appliances are safe inside.

Can I touch the main switch when water is near electrical equipment?
