A CCTV installation in Manchester needs cameras, recording, power and viewing planned together. TRACEFORM installs wired systems for homes and small businesses across Greater Manchester, Liverpool, London, Cambridge and Peterborough. For home CCTV installation, we check entrances and driveways. For businesses, we check the key work areas. We agree privacy-aware positions and plan cable routes and equipment. Your quote sets out the setup, handover, account ownership and any optional remote-viewing services.

Home and small-business CCTV installation

A front entrance, driveway, shop counter and stockroom each do a different job. Tell us what event you want to review and where it happens. A survey checks viewing angles, lighting and access for fitting and maintenance. A camera-count package does not show whether the recordings will answer your question. No installation can guarantee to prevent crime.

Plan coverage before choosing camera numbers

Agree what each proposed camera should see, and what it should not record. Take care with neighbouring windows, shared paths and public space. Before you accept the system, check real recordings in the lighting that matters. Do not rely on a simulated preview or a claimed recognition distance.

Wired cameras, recording and remote viewing

Plan cables, power, network and the recorder location together. Finished walls, external heights and outbuildings affect routes and access. Wired cameras still need a compatible recording setup. Remote viewing depends on the equipment. It may need internet, certain account permissions or subscriptions. Calling a camera smart does not mean remote viewing is included.

Home and business privacy duties are different

ICO home guidance explains your duties when cameras record beyond your boundary. Businesses must think about their duties as a controller, notices, who can view footage and requests from people recorded. Use positioning, masking and audio settings to avoid recording more than you need. We set up the agreed system. The owner must use it lawfully day to day.

Signs, audio and retention

Decide where people need to see recording information, and whether you really need audio. Set how long you keep footage for a written purpose. Do not base it on an assumed legal number or the size of the disk. Equipment and recording settings should support that choice. Our home-law and business GDPR guides explain the different duties. A configured system does not make you legally compliant on its own.

Key facts before you plan

  1. Home CCTV recording beyond the property boundary brings data-protection responsibilities; it is not automatically prohibited in every case.

  2. There is no universal retention period. Choose and document a period justified by the recording purpose.

  3. The ICO says subject-access requests normally need a response within one calendar month, subject to applicable exceptions.

How a planned project runs

  1. Describe the views you need

Send your postcode, why you want to record and safe outside photos. For a business, tell us who makes decisions and your working hours. Tell us about shared areas and neighbouring windows before we choose positions.

  2. Survey coverage, routes and connectivity

TRACEFORM checks camera positions, lighting, cable access, power and where the recorder goes. Tell us if you need remote viewing and what internet you have. Equipment models, storage and the detail you can get depend on the survey.

  3. Agree equipment and quotation scope

List cameras, recorder or storage, power, cables, access equipment and commissioning. State VAT, any subscriptions and what support covers. The owner sets a clear reason for how long footage is kept. The equipment must then be checked against it.

  4. Install and commission the agreed system

Fit the wired system and check the real views, recording and privacy settings. Agree how we will record checks in daylight and darkness. Check that it works in practice. An example image or product resolution is not proof.

  5. Demonstrate retrieval and owner access

Show live viewing, event playback and export to a usable file. Confirm the authorised account owner, recovery and who has access. Keep equipment details and acceptance notes, so the owner can run the system after handover.

What should the CCTV quotation and handover cover?

Compare useful views, recording and owner access together. Camera numbers do not describe installation scope or determine privacy compliance.

  • Home entrances and driveways

Find the useful area and the neighbouring boundaries. Use placement and masking to avoid recording more than you need.

  • Shops and small workplaces

Agree operating hours, why you record and who manages footage. Your privacy duties as a business carry on after installation.

  • Playback and usable exports

Handover should show an authorised owner how to find an event and export footage on the installed system.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CCTV installation cost in Manchester?

A wired 4-camera IP system with recorder typically costs £895–£1,745, and each extra camera £185–£375. Cable routes, mounting heights, access equipment and storage size move the price within that range. After the survey you get a written quote listing cameras, recorder, cabling, commissioning, VAT and any app subscription.

How many cameras will my property need?

The number depends on the areas and events you want to review. An entrance, driveway and stockroom may need different views. A survey should assess useful recorded detail, lighting and privacy boundaries before equipment is selected. Camera count alone cannot confirm coverage or promise identification from every recording.

Can I view my CCTV remotely on my phone?

Remote viewing can be configured where the selected equipment supports it and it forms part of the agreed scope. Confirm internet requirements, permissions and any subscription charges first. Handover should demonstrate the actual arrangement and leave the responsible owner able to manage access and recover the account.

Is it legal to point CCTV at a neighbour’s property?

Recording beyond your boundary brings data-protection responsibilities, rather than a blanket prohibition in every case. Minimise unnecessary capture through suitable positioning and masking, and follow current ICO guidance. Raise neighbouring windows, shared paths and public areas at the survey so the owner can assess purpose and privacy before views are agreed.

How long should I keep CCTV footage?

Use a period justified by the recording purpose; there is no universal legal retention number. Businesses should document the decision, restrict access and ensure the system supports routine deletion. Relevant incident footage may need preserving, while material no longer needed should be removed. Storage capacity alone should not set your retention policy.

Can CCTV footage be used as evidence in a police investigation?

It may be useful, depending on recorded detail, timing and available footage. Equipment branding does not establish evidential value. Ask for a demonstration of locating an event and exporting a usable file during handover. Keep the original secure and follow police instructions when supplying material through an appropriate authorised route.

Our electrics kept tripping and we had no idea why. He found the faulty socket and sorted it on the same visit. Really pleased, thanks again 👍
