Partial power loss safety guide

Partial Power Loss: Why Is Only Part of the Property Off?

Partial power loss means some circuits, rooms or electrical points still work while others do not. It often involves an individual circuit, an RCD-protected group or a local wiring fault rather than a complete supply failure. Because parts of the property remain energised, treat every socket, switch and cable as potentially live.

What should I do about partial power loss?

During partial power loss, note safely whether one circuit, several circuits or nearby properties are affected. Use a torch; never remove covers, overload working circuits or repeatedly reset protection. Switch off affected equipment only if safe. Call 105 for a wider outage or uncertain network supply; keep clear of heat and water and arrange qualified testing for a property fault.

Do not rely on the visible pattern alone

Partial power loss can look straightforward, but the installation is still energised and the visible pattern does not identify the fault. Record what is affected, avoid repeated resets and let suitable testing establish what can safely return to service.

Map what has lost power without taking risks

From a safe position, note whether the problem affects lights, sockets, fixed appliances, one room, one floor or an outbuilding. Use only normal switches and visible indicators. Do not remove socket fronts, open the consumer unit, use improvised testers or touch exposed conductors. A light being off does not prove its wiring is dead.

Look at the consumer unit only from outside its closed cover. You may note which visible switch appears to have moved, but do not repeatedly reset it. If there is heat, a burning smell, buzzing, crackling, sparking, water or visible damage, keep away. Switch off at the consumer unit only if it is safe to approach; leave and call 999 if there is fire or smoke.

A dead socket beside a working light can still be surrounded by live wiring. Keep covers in place.

Why working lights and dead sockets can happen together

Lighting and socket circuits are commonly protected separately. One protective device can operate while another circuit remains live. Split-load consumer units may also place several circuits behind one RCD, so a single fault can remove power from an apparently unrelated group of rooms or appliances. Labels vary and cannot establish the cause on their own. A circuit still working is not proof that it is safe.

Possible causes include a faulty appliance, moisture, damaged wiring, a loose connection, an overloaded circuit or a problem with a protective device. The pattern is useful evidence, not a diagnosis. Professional inspection and testing are needed to identify the affected circuit, locate the fault and decide what can safely be restored.

Do not shift high-demand appliances onto the remaining sockets or run improvised leads between rooms.

Protect the circuits that are still working

Do not move heaters, kettles or several extension leads onto the remaining live sockets. That can overload a working circuit and introduce trip, heat and trailing-cable hazards. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed, use a torch rather than candles, and arrange safe alternatives for medical equipment or essential business systems.

How partial power loss can appear

The affected combination of lights, sockets and rooms helps an electrician plan testing.

  • Lights on, sockets offLighting and socket circuits are often separate, so one can remain live when protection disconnects the other.Table lamp lit in a living room with the ceiling lights off

What partial power loss means

Safe next steps

What to do when only part of the property is off

Observe safely, avoid extra loads and arrange diagnosis rather than dismantling or guessing.

  1. 1Rule out heat, water and damageKeep away from smoke, heat, sparking, buzzing, water or damage. Leave and call 999 if there is fire or smoke.
  2. 2List live and dead rooms or circuitsFrom safety, list the affected rooms, lights, sockets and appliances using only normal controls and visible indicators.
  3. 3Avoid loading the remaining supplyDo not repeatedly reset protection or move several appliances and extension leads onto a working circuit.
  4. 4Request targeted circuit testingAsk a NICEIC registered electrician to identify the fault, isolate danger and explain the safe repair options.

Call 999 for fire or smoke

  • Do not remove socket, switch or consumer-unit covers
  • Do not repeatedly reset an RCD, MCB or RCBO
  • Do not overload working sockets with extension leads
  • Do not touch exposed conductors or electrics near water

Leave the property if necessary and do not use water on electrical equipment.

When partial power loss is urgent

Heat, smell, sparking, water, damage or repeated trips require prompt action.

  • Lights work but sockets do not
  • One room, floor or outbuilding is off
  • Only some fixed appliances have power
  • One RCD, MCB or RCBO appears off
  • Power returns and then fails again
  • Loss follows a leak, storm or building work

Possible causes

What can cause partial power loss?

Appliances, wiring, moisture, connections and protective devices can produce similar symptoms.

  • White washing machine beside a plugged-in socket in a blue-walled utility roomFaulty applianceA connected appliance fault can operate protection serving its circuit.
  • Consumer unit with an RCD and several breakers trippedRCD operationEarth leakage on one circuit can disconnect every circuit grouped behind an RCD.
  • Consumer unit on a wall with a single breaker trippedCircuit breaker operationOvercurrent or a short circuit can cause an MCB or RCBO to disconnect a circuit.
  • Rainwater beading on a grey outdoor socket cover mounted on a brick wallMoisture ingressWater affecting outdoor or indoor wiring can cause protection to operate.
  • Cordless drill next to a light switch being removed from the wallDamaged wiringDrilling, building work, wear or pests can damage a cable and interrupt a circuit.
  • Socket faceplate with browning along one edgeLoose connectionA deteriorated connection can interrupt supply and may also create dangerous heat.

Stay safe while some power remainsAssume every untested circuit is live. Never remove covers, touch exposed conductors or use wet equipment. Switch off only when safe, and call 999 for fire or smoke.

Danger signs that change the response

Keep away and call 999 for fire or smoke. Seek urgent electrical help for heat, sparking, water or damage.

  • Smoke, flames or active sparking
  • A burning smell, heat, buzzing or crackling
  • Water close to sockets, wiring or the consumer unit
  • Exposed conductors or damaged electrical equipment
  • Loss of essential medical or safety equipment

“We had lights everywhere but every socket downstairs was dead — fridge, freezer, router, the lot. The engineer arrived within the hour and found the ring final circuit had a broken connection behind the hallway socket, which had left half the ring overloaded and the rest without power. He repaired the joint, tested the ring end-to-end and confirmed both legs were continuous before putting it back on. He was clear about what had failed and why, and the fridge was cold again before he left.”

FAQ

Partial power loss questions

Answers about working lights, dead sockets, extension leads and safe investigation.

Why can lights work during partial power loss?

Lighting and socket outlets commonly have separate circuits and protective devices. A socket circuit or an RCD serving several circuits may have operated while the lighting circuit remains energised. Do not assume any point is dead, remove covers or repeatedly reset protection. Note the visible pattern and arrange professional diagnosis if the cause is unclear.

Should extension leads be used during partial power loss?

Do not use extension leads as a substitute for diagnosis. Moving several appliances onto a remaining circuit can overload it, while leads across doors, stairs or public areas create further hazards. Keep essential use to a safe minimum and ask an electrician to establish why the original circuit lost power.

Can partial power loss still involve the local network?

No. A wider network fault can affect supplies in different ways, but partial loss inside one property often involves circuit protection, grouped RCD protection or an installation fault. Check whether neighbours are affected without entering unsafe areas, then seek professional advice if only your property or part of it is off.

Which affected circuits should I note during partial power loss?

From a safe position, note which lights, sockets, floors or business zones are affected, when the problem began, what equipment was running and whether a visible consumer-unit switch moved. Also report heat, smell, sound, water or damage. Stop observing and move away if there is immediate danger.

May I remove a cover to investigate partial power loss?

No. Covers can conceal live parts even when one room or circuit appears to be off. Never open sockets, switches, the consumer unit, meter or sealed supply equipment. Keep away from wet, hot, damaged or sparking electrics and share only observations made without dismantling anything.
